Louise McClure Workshop: Panoply...Six Narrative Charms

What: This fabulous series showcases six distinctive charms in various sizes and materials that you create! Everything you need to layer, fabricate and embellish each of the charms is included in the kit.

The origins of embellishment are rooted in symbolism and spiritualism. Unique to the human experience, we adorn ourselves and our environments with charms, amulets and talisman to seek protection from evil, encourage favor with the gods, invite prosperity into our lives. Not just objects of personal adornment that express wealth or identification, images, signs, symbols, stones and crystals have long been believed to impart certain energies and qualities to the wearer.

How: Create a half-dozen distinctive, narrative charms by cutting and layering various scrapbook papers and stickers with glass and inserting into metal bezels, layer bits of ephemera under heat set granules in a deep metal bezel, apply various textures, images and text with rubber stamps to glass mirrored discs, cardstock and mica, add color with a selection of pigments, paints, pastel chalks and colored pencils, and enhance your creations with gold and silver leaf pens, mica flakes and granules.

Combine simple scrapbooking techniques to form a multi page narrative journal charm.

Learn wire finishing and wrapping techniques to form links and attach your completed charms, beads, stone and crystal embellishments to a beaded chain base you create yourself.

Enhance your creation with velvet ribbon and sheer ribbons

Explore the magic of signs, symbols, numbers, crystal lore, talisman and amulets.

Observe through an up close and personal look at examples of art jewelry, charms, books and photos...the significance of positive visualization in our lives, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Sanctuary Of Stuff Workshops, Nina Bagley

Workshop: Creating a Copper Booklace
Instructor: Nina Bagley
Date: Saturday, April 22
Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Spend a day with Nina constructing a necklace of aged copper, mica, and paper that forms a mini-book to be worn around the neck, telling in small scale a delicate story in transparent detail. Techniques covered will be assorted metal patinas, wire wrapping, mica pages, eyelet work, inkjet transfers, metal stamping, copper mesh, and word play. Along with metal patinas and hammering, we will explore the use of eyelets as “paper re-enforcers” (remember those little gummed circles we had to lick over and over for notepaper holes in elementary school?!) for miniature mica and copper mesh pages that sandwich images and words, as well as paper ones that showcase soft, ethereal transfers.

For more information about Nina, see her website at http://www.ninabagley.com

Material Fee
A $15.00 fee, collected in the classroom, includes everything for the necklace except the tools. It includes a 1 ½”x 1 3/4” 20 gauge, pre-cut and drilled copper front and back “cover”, copper 30” chain, copper wire and mesh, small mica sheet “pages”, eyelets, assorted charm findings, and copper bezel cup image frames with pre-cut plexiglass.

Student Supplies
Please bring the following tools from home*:
- bent needle-nosed pliers, round needle-nosed pliers
- wire snips
- hole punch for 1/8” eyelets (PLEASE bring your Japanese screw punch if you own one – if not, now is the time to buy one! I use these extensively in my work and can’t do without the two that I own; a #3 tip is used for the 1/8” eyelets; #1.5 is for the 1/16 eyelets; volcanoarts.biz sells these); an awl will make do
- eyelet setting tool
- small hammer (earplugs optional!)
- cutting pad to prevent marring table surface
- metal ruler
- utility knife (exacto knife)
- scissors, glue stick (I actually prefer PVA or Golden matte medium),
- Heat gun, optional
- Two small binder clips
- Small square of medium grit sandpaper
- Paper ephemera with small images from your own scrap collection
- Transparency images (clear images on transparency film), optional
- Organza fabric scraps, optional
- Copper tape, optional but wonderful for this project
- Metal alphabet stamps, optional
- One or two pages of old book text (dictionary, etc)
- Fiskers hand drill, optional (1/16th and 1/8” drill bits) but wonderful!

*All tools and supplies mentioned above, including the Japanese screw punch and needle-nosed pliers, can be purchased online through volcanoarts.biz! wonderful service! Quick shipping, and Christine honors paypal as well.
